Personalised Educational Scaffolding

Educational scaffolding plays a crucial role in supporting students to reach their full potential by providing individualised guidance and support. As the traditional one-size-fits-all educational approaches often fall short in catering to the diverse learning needs and styles of individual students, new education frameworks are coming into play. This new focus highlights the necessity for personalised learning experiences that adapt to specific student requirements. This research introduces the Digital Autonomous Virtual Educator (DAVE) project, an AI-powered chatbot integrated within the FAIE learning application used in Maltese primary schools. DAVE leverages AI technologies to analyse student academic data, personalise learning materials, and provide tailored educational scaffolding in real-time. Evaluation of DAVE’s implementation demonstrates its significant impact on student learning and user experience. Students utilizing DAVE achieved improved results on mathematics worksheets by a margin of 32%, while also reporting higher user satisfaction levels of 12%. Student feedback from the study reflected the high valuation of Scaffolding when receiving assistance as opposed to direct answers. These findings highlight the potential of AI-powered chatbots like DAVE to provide personalised educational scaffolding, leading to enhanced learning outcomes and increased student engagement.
