Translation as Communication: Conveying Tencent’s ESG Vision to the World

With the increasing global concern for environmental, social, and governance (ESG) issues, ESG reports have emerged as a vital instrument for enterprises to demonstrate their social responsibility, cultivate their brand image, and enhance their competitiveness in the international market. However, Chinese enterprises, which are still relatively nascent in the ESG field, face not only the conceptual and data gathering challenges of local ESG practice but also the linguistic and cultural complexities of translating these reports for overseas audiences. This chapter aims to analyze the translation of Tencent’s 2023 ESG report from a corpus-based perspective of translation, focusing on the linguistic differences between the Chinese source text and the English target text. By building a small English-Chinese parallel database and using LancsBox6.0, Wmatrix7.0, WordSmith9.0, and Wordless3.5.0 as analysis tools, the study is carried out at four levels: lexical, syntactic, discourse, and metaphorical, to reveal the translation strategies of the ESG report. The translation of ESG reports is an issue that necessitates immediate scrutiny due to little prior literature on the subject. Therefore, this chapter substantially contributes to research on the translation of enterprises’ ESG reports by conveying a sustainability vision for global readers and offering valuable insights into the decoding and encoding of ESG narratives and analogous corporate documents across diverse languages and cultures.
