Integration of Multicultural Values in Social Science Learning in Indonesia

One of the strategic issues of Indonesian education is multiculturalism with ethnic, cultural and religious diversity that can have a unifying educational concept, so that multicultural education is a necessity, not an option. The implementation of multiculturalism education in Indonesia has four values: equality, tolerance, democracy and pluralism. Multicultural education in Indonesia has juridical power from the provisions of Law No. 20 of 2003, that education is organized in a democratic, equitable and non-discriminatory manner. Educational institutions have a curriculum that supports the implementation of multicultural education, teachers have multicultural perceptions, attitudes and behaviors as a form of contribution to fostering multicultural attitudes of students. The integration of multicultural values in social science learning in Indonesia, the implementation of the value of equal citizenship in diversity, as a form of preservation of local and national cultural values facing the development of globalization. This chapter is a literature review with the focus: (1) the foundation and implementation of multiculturalism education in Indonesia, (2) the urgency of multicultural education in Indonesia, (3) the design of multicultural education in Indonesia, (4) the integration of multicultural values in social science learning.
