In order to detect and locate the leakage of the tank wall of full-containment LNG tank, the feasibility of AE technique is studied on a full-containment LNG storage tank with capacity of 200,000 cubic meters in this work. It is proved that acoustic emission technique is a very effective method. The amplitude of AE signals can be used to characterize whether there is a leakage. When using the VS30-RIC sensor, the attenuation coefficient of AE signal is 32 dB, which is very significant. It is recommended to use low-frequency sensors for detection of the leakage. The AE sensor should be mounted on the wall along the line with the same diameter as the buried metal parts and scanning method should be adopted with a step no more than 1.5 m along the line.
