BBIN as a Gateway of Opportunity for Northeast India

  • Alok Yadav

摘要

Since the establishment of SAARCSouth Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) in 1985, this organization has failed to achieve its goals due to the obstructionist policies of Pakistan. After this, the attention of the member nations was directed to cooperate in development and connectivity projects through other sub-regional organizations except for Pakistan. The culmination is the Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, and Nepal (BBIN) initiative. Because of the economic interconnectivity evidenced by “growth triangles” across Asia and previous unaddressed concerns of eastern subcontinent states, its Council of Ministers endorsed the South Asian Growth Quadrangle in May 1996. (SAGQ). The direct benefit of this initiative to the backward region of North-East India is the development of India. Even though the four countries were members of the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARCSouth Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC)), the new subregional framework enabled them to participate in direct negotiations to improve regional connectivityConnectivity, regional, tourism, commerce and investment, and environmental security cooperation. Because of North East India’s important position, the BBIN corridor will hugely influence the region’s growth. As a result, the North East states have been staunch supporters of BBIN.
