Lot of prestigious tunneling projects are under construction across the country to connect remote places. To improve the daily lives of people in Jammu and Kashmir and link them via the railway network, it is necessary to create passages through the mountainous regions. The Indian Railway’s Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link Project (USBRL) aims to connect this beautiful valley with an all-weather, economic rail link. The track passes through challenging Himalayan geology, with 70% of it covered by tunnels between Udhampur and Qazigund. These tunnels range from a few hundred meters to 12.78 km in length. The 11.20 km long Pir Panjal tunnel (T-80), the first major tunnel of this project, was commissioned in 2013 and is operational. Another significant tunnel, T-49, is 12.78 km long and surpasses T-80. Due to construction difficulties, T-49 is split into T-49A (5,100 m) and T-49B (7,700 m). This discussion focuses on the T-49A project, an important part of the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla New BG Rail Line Project in Jammu and Kashmir. The twin tunnels, main and escape, are each 5.1 km long and horseshoe shaped, with diameters of 7.12 m and 4.5 m, respectively, bored through very weak geology using NATM. This project faced numerous challenges, including poor road conditions and complex supply chain management. The successful completion of this project, with excellent teamwork and cooperation with Northern Railways, provides valuable insights for field engineers working on similar projects.
