Rockfall mitigation measures with the aim of reducing the effect of probable rockfall events are vital in various infrastructure development projects in hilly or mountainous regions, and the need for suitably designed measures is paramount. The different rockfall mitigation measures as per IRC: HRB-SR 23 are rockfall warning measures (such as alert systems), rockfall protection measures (e.g., simple drapery system, berms, dynamic rockfall barriers among others), rockfall retention measures (e.g., secured drapery system), and rockfall prevention measures (e.g., drainage measures, scaling/trimming among others). These rockfall mitigation measures can be selected based on various site situations, singularly or in combination to achieve the best effectiveness. The case studies presented are of the rockfall mitigation projects involving rockfall protection and retention measures implemented along major roads and railways passing through Western Ghats where strata are predominantly basaltic with varying layers of weathering, sandwiched layers of weak strata, and overburden soil at crest. The site details, engineering investigations carried out, brief analysis and design of various mitigation measures, construction activities, and maintenance aspects are presented.
