Cities across the globe are relying mostly on infrastructure that was constructed for a different era, one with softer temperatures, slower urban expansion, and more consistent use patterns. With lengthy but limited lifespans, roads, bridges, tunnels, pipelines, electricity lines, dams, drainage systems, and transit networks were frequently built decades ago. Nowadays, a large number of these systems are getting older, breaking down, or performing below their designed limits. The strains on this aged urban infrastructure are becoming more severe as the climate issue worsens; they are no longer minor.
