This chapter outlines international developments in the quest to protect the needs and interest of future generations, including the establishment of the ImPACT Coalition for Future Generations in the leadup to the 2024 UN Summit of the Future. We outline the impact of the Declaration on Future Generations as part of the Pact for the Future, and the creation of the role of UN Special Envoy for Future Generations. These developments will provide normative foundations and a shared focus for Future Generations Policy work across the globe at national and sub-national levels. The chapter then considers pushback to these developments and the structural barriers at national levels to adopting Future Generations Policy, including public opinion in democracies. We consider the clear message from Global Majority countries that a technocratic future-focus cannot become an excuse to ignore contemporary legacies of colonialism, structural inequality, and ongoing global disparities, which require immediate action.
