Chapter 2 defines in detail what is encapsulated by the term Future Generations PolicyFuture Generations Policy. We explore fundamental ideas such as defining future generations as those yet to be born, and focusing on meeting their needs and interests. We determine how far policymakers should be looking into the future and examine the merits of different time horizons. This chapter outlines how Future Generations Policy fits with ideas such as sustainable development, wellbeingwellbeing economies, intergenerational equity and transitional justice. This chapter seeks to outline key terms, laying the groundwork for the rest of the book. These include the idea of planning for pluralplural futures, using the capabilities of futures literacy and strategic foresight. Finally, we argue that not all long-term thinking serves the interests of future generations, if it fails to move beyond an “extended present” mindset.
