This introductory chapter introduces the concepts of “polycrisis” and the new term “policrastinationpolicrastination” to explain the need for Future Generations Policy. The systemic problems combined with pressures to deliver solutions only in the short term reveal the limitations of our current approaches to leadershipleadership and decision-making, particularly in balancing pressing immediate policy needs with long-term priorities. This introduction defines what Future Generations Policy is and is not, based on lessons learned from global interventions. This introduction provides a justification for why Australia is an excellent site for systemic change in placing a crucial long-term temporal lens over policy-making.
