Charting the Blue Economy: Building a Sustainable India-Japan Future

The sustainable use of ocean resources for enhancing economic growth, improvement of livelihoods, attainment of jobs and increase of ocean ecosystem health is what we understand to be the blue economy. The blue economy is the next sun rise sector. By advocating greening of ocean development strategies, the blue economy works towards the ocean’s health for higher productivity and conservation. Through a blue economy, a nation also seeks to unite its economic and social opportunities given by the ocean. The various facets of it being Renewable energy, fisheries, maritime transport, maritime tourism, waste management and mitigation of climate change. This study is both descriptive and analytical. Relevant literature has been reviewed to trace the contemporary context of this study. The paper analyses the significance of the Blue Economy, and the contemporary issues related to the blue economy and tries to make suggestions for the issues identified. It further analyses India-Japan’s partnership as practitioners of the blue economy and the constraints faced by the countries in achieving SDG 14. The paper further tries to understand the role of Quad in the Indo-Japanese Strategic sustainable path and its implications on China.
