In the twenty-first century, the Japan-India partnership’s strategic stance in the Indo-Pacific has changed significantly. Driven by China’s increasing aggressiveness and the need for strong security relationships, this change represents a clear departure from both countries’ conventional approaches to regional security. The relationship between Japan and India, their participation in the Quadrilateral Security Dialogue (Quad), and their all-encompassing approach to regional security are examined in this article as examples of a strategic reaction to changing geopolitical conditions. India has shown an unprecedented willingness to forge stronger security partnerships and play a more active role in shaping the regional security architecture—all while upholding its fundamental principle of strategic autonomy—while Japan has been prompted to forge closer ties with India due to the Chinese threat. The complementary nature of Japan’s and India’s strengths become apparent as the former recasts its security missions and strengthens its defence and maritime capabilities. Japan gives financial support and cutting-edge technology skills to meet urgent infrastructure needs because it sees India as an essential partner in the security architecture of the region. This paper will analyse India-Japan Cooperation in defence and how their ties evolved, focusing more deeply on the defence exercises between the two nations.
