India and Japan have a Special Strategic and Global Partnership which has a long history of close cultural and civilizational relationships. This paper will review the relationship between these two nations in terms of alignment with the region on the Indo-Pacific front and how India and Japan are complementary to each other in their respective approach towards freedom of navigation and greater connectivity, by their respective Act-East Policy and Free and Open Indo-Pacific (FOIP) Vision. In the context of the growing geopolitical tension, such as the aggressive China policy, India and Japan are among the key actors in the democratic sphere keen on playing a role in a stable Indo-Pacific. This paper examines their collaboration in transferring technology and regional economic partnership on issues of infrastructure. It looks at how the development and cooperation in the renewable energy sector as well as help in the development and construction of the high-speed rail system in India through Japanese aid can result in both growth and sustainability of all countries. The impact of regional economic cooperation and in particular the Asia-Africa Growth Corridor (AAGC), on economic relations and infrastructure development is also reviewed in the paper. There is good potential in this, but problems such as national priorities and addressing the perception of the people remain. The paper concludes by reiterating the India-Japan alliance as a strategic precondition in the evolution of an effective “Indo-Pacific region. This coalition has a huge potential to counter threats to the region and encourage a rules-based international order to bring hope into the future.
