The recognition of the criticality of Early Childhood Care and Education (ECCE) which appears so natural in current discourse, has been a battle long fought by researchers, academicians and activists. This chapter presents an overview of ECCE in India to understand how policies and programs have evolved into the current ECCE landscape which has diverse characteristics in different parts of the country, but many similar systemic challenges. Many of these gaps became even more apparent during the Covid-19 pandemic which highlighted the need for a sustainable ECCE delivery system. The challenges and opportunities stem from the multi-sectoral character of ECCE (including health, nutrition, education, care and protection). These are critically analyzed to carve out a way forward, to reimagine core components of ECCE research, policy and practice.

摘要
