Ageing in India: Navigating Its Evolving Landscape
摘要
India is experiencing a rapid demographic shift, with the older adult population growing significantly and projected to reach 347 million by 2050. Traditionally, older adults in India have been revered as custodians of wisdom, playing essential roles in family and community life. However, the evolving social landscape, characterized by urban migration, nuclear families and economic pressures, has disrupted traditional support systems, leading to new challenges for older adults. This chapter explores the cultural and contemporary perspectives on ageing in India, highlighting social isolation, healthcare disparities and the breakdown of traditional caregiving structures. Additionally, the rise of “active ageing” and the changing aspirations of older adults are examined in the context of intergenerational relationships and family dynamics. This chapter calls for re-evaluating traditional reverence for older adults, urging the integration of modern policies and programs to address their diverse needs. By combining cultural respect with contemporary solutions, India can create a more inclusive and supportive environment for its ageing population.
