Review of Biodegradable Materials in Additive Manufacturing
摘要
Additive manufacturing involves production of customized parts of small quantity that inherently involves creation of substantial waste through failed trials. Further, some fabrication processes involve substantial amounts of unused material. For most of the processes, materials are substantially degraded in the process and blended with multiple components inhibiting reuse and recycling. For these reasons, the use of biodegradable materials in additive manufacturing may address this solid waste problem. Many materials that claim biodegradability such as polylactic acid are not recyclable in the current US society. Some materials like polyhydroxybutyrate are cost prohibitive. Biomaterials such as cellulose/wood and chitosan/chitin offer substantial potential at low cost and with real circularity. Biodegradable, adaptable, animate materials containing living organisms offer a window into the future of biosourced, biodegradable, and bioactive advanced manufacturing.
