BIM Adoption: A Review of Global Trends, Research Progress, and Future Directions

Building Information Modeling (BIM), as a core technology in the digital transformation of the construction industry, has been continuously expanding and deepening worldwide. This paper systematically reviews the evolution of BIM-related policies, standardization efforts, and industrial integration pathways in different countries, highlighting that its promotion generally exhibits a composite pattern of “government guidance—standard formulation—market adaptation.” At the academic level, BIM research themes have evolved from an early focus on technical functionalities to encompass adoption behaviors, educational models, and project performance, with theoretical foundations primarily drawn from behavioral models such as TAM, UTAUT, and TPB. This evolution reflects a shift from qualitative to quantitative approaches, from organizational to individual perspectives, and from macro- to micro-level analyses. However, significant gaps remain in the field of BIM education, such as modeling student learning pathways, evaluating competition-based learning mechanisms, and developing interdisciplinary curriculum systems. Based on a review of global development trends and research progress, this paper proposes that future work should strengthen educational behavior modeling, develop robust assessment tools, and investigate region-specific adaptation mechanisms, in order to further advance BIM education theory and support its effective implementation in practice.
