During the Northern Song Dynasty, a wandering monk passed through a village late in the day. Seeking shelter, he approached a local household for accommodation. Initially refused, he persisted and requested only to sleep overnight in the carport outside the house. The homeowner eventually agreed. That night, a thief climbed over the wall and entered the house. Shortly after, the monk, who was resting in the carport, witnessed the thief exiting with a woman and a large bundle. Fearing he would be blamed for the theft—especially since he had been denied shelter indoors—the monk decided to flee before dawn.
