Reliability Study of Vibration Correlation Technique for Buckling Analyses of Flanged Cruciform Columns

A preliminary approach to stability analyses of flanged cruciform columns was made to explore the effectiveness of a non-destructive method, the vibration correlation technique (VCT), in predicting critical buckling pressure. A total of four different materials, structural steel, aluminium alloy, E-glass fibre-reinforced epoxy polymer composite, and carbon fibre-reinforced epoxy polymer composite, were considered for stability analyses with the same geometry. Initial trials were run considering two imperfection types: bent and twisted columns. Further studies were narrowed down to analyses of twisted columns only, as no significant margin was observed in the results. The outcomes prove that VCT is the most reliable method for predicting critical buckling loads of cruciform columns.
