Impact Performance of Eco-Friendly Composite Materials with Eggshell Micro-Filler

摘要

The objective of this research is to investigate advanced biodegradable composite materials to enhance their mechanical properties to fulfill the current increasing demand of sustainable green composites. These will indeed be beneficial for future generations, wildlife, and the world in the long run. It leans towards the use of naturally available or cheap and waste materials such as eggshells for strong green composites. Particularly, natural hemp fiber is used as reinforcement, and eggshell powder as micro-filler is introduced in the epoxy resin. Composite laminates were fabricated using a cross-ply stacking sequence of (0|90)2s. To evaluate the impact resistance, a series of drop-weight impact tests were performed at different energy levels, and velocity is obtained by changing the heights of the drop mass. The study explored laminates containing 1%, 2%, and 3% micro eggshell powder. The results demonstrate that the composite with 3% micro eggshell powder exhibited the higher impact resistance when tested under 25 J impact energy. It proves that the presence of filler content in the material plays a crucial role to enhance composite performance. The outcomes ensure the feasibility of developing efficient, green composite materials with excellent mechanical properties, suitable for applications in industries and other domestic applications. This study contributes to the reduction of environmental pollution and promotion of a sustainable economy through reusing of waste materials.
