Ligament Reconstruction of Baastrup’s Disease

Bastrop’s disease, commonly known as the “kissing spine” syndrome, is a condition characterized by abnormal contact between adjacent spinous processes of the spine, usually in the lumbar region (Farinha et al. Acta Reumatol Port 40:302–303, 2015; Hagner Med Pr 39(1):65–70, 1988; Maes et al. Spine (Phila Pa 1976) 33(7):211–215, 2008; Lamer et al. Pain Physician 11:549–554, 2008; Okada et al. Asian Spine J 8:260–266, 2014). Commonly associated with degenerative changes, anatomical alterations, or postural factors, this syndrome is characterized by localized back pain and restricted motion, particularly during spinal extension (Farinha et al. Acta Reumatol Port 40:302–303, 2015; Hagner Med Pr 39(1):65–70, 1988; Maes et al. Spine (Phila Pa 1976) 33(7):211–215, 2008; Mitra et al. Arch Phys Med Rehabil 88:1353–1356, 2007; Okada et al. Asian Spine J 8:260–266, 2014; Beks Acta Neurochir 100:134–135, 1989). Diagnosis is mainly based on imaging techniques such as X-ray and MRI, which show the approximation of the spinous processes and potential intervertebral bursitis (Hagner Med Pr 39(1):65–70, 1988; Philipp et al. Management focuses on conservative measures, including physiotherapy, pain management, and lifestyle modifications, with interventions such as corticosteroid injections or radiofrequency ablation considered in persistent cases (Maes et al. Spine (Phila Pa 1976) 33(7):211–215, 2008; Lamer et al. Pain Physician 11:549–554, 2008). Surgical solutions such as resection or spinal fusion are reserved for severe and resistant conditions (Maes et al. Spine (Phila Pa 1976) 33(7):211–215, 2008; Lamer et al. Pain Physician 11:549–554, 2008; Filippiadis et al. Insights Imaging 6:123–128, 2015). Ligament reconstruction surgery is a minimally invasive and effective treatment for Baastrup’s disease.
