Valorisation Potential of Combustible Fraction of Legacy Waste Obtained from Landfill Mining
摘要
Landfill mining is a sustainable solution to manage the legacy waste in the old landfills. Among the different materials recovered during landfill mining, the combustible fraction is the major component which accounts for 4–50% of the total legacy waste. Therefore, its effective utilization is crucial for the success of a landfill mining project. The current chapter examines the composition and characteristics of the combustible fraction of legacy waste based on the existing literature and provides a comparison of global studies with those conducted in India. The chapter aims to explore potential valorization options for this fraction. Considering the high calorific value of the combustible fraction of legacy waste, its use as a fuel in waste-to-energy processes is identified as the potential valorization option. Considering this, a strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats (SWOT) analysis is conducted to assess the feasibility and challenges associated with its usage as a fuel. This analysis will help to identify the barriers hindering its utilization and highlight the necessary efforts required to address these challenges. Findings of the SWOT analysis underscore the potential of utilizing the combustible fraction for energy recovery and industrial co-processing, reducing the dependency on fossil fuels. However, challenges like feedstock quality and emission control need to be addressed for enhancing its utilization.
