Statistics by experts show that China sent more than 22 million containers to West European countries in 2016. In the same period, only 156,000 containers were transported by land via Russia, less than 1% of the previous figure, a tiny proportion even though it was 86% more than the 84,000 containers in 2015. Considering this, ensuring the development of the Eurasian railway corridor and shifting some sea-shipped cargoes to land transport is the main strategic task of Russia’s transportation system. To promote trade cooperation with Central Asian and European partners, China, the initiator and advocate of the new Silk Road, is building different types of transport infrastructure in Eurasia. It’s worth noting that the volume of container transport between China and Russia has been rising every year in the past 5 years, up more than 30% in 2016.
