Fishermans Bend, a daring reimagining of 480 hectares of inner-urban industrial land on the outskirts of Melbourne’s central core (Victoria Government n.d.), is one of the most ambitious urban changes in Australian history. The region has long been in the city’s blind spot because of its expansive warehouses, haphazard street layout, and close proximity to the working ports of the Yarra River. However, Fishermans Bend is now at the forefront of a new urban vision: a mixed-use, walkable, dense, and innovative district that is expected to house 80,000 jobs and more than 80,000 residents by the middle of the century (Victoria State Government 2018).
