Trifarotene is a novel fourth-generation retinoid approved by the US FDA in 2019 for the management of acne vulgaris. Its uniqueness lies in selective RAR-γ agonism. Trifarotene demonstrates significant efficacy in treating moderate facial and truncal acne, with visible improvements as early as 1–2 weeks and continued benefits with ongoing therapy. It shows promise in managing acne scars, as well as acanthosis nigricans. Besides it has been evaluated in autosomal recessive congenital ichthyosis, and cutaneous T-cell lymphoma, results of which remain pending. Also, the safety profile of trifarotene is very favourable with minimal systemic absorption, making it suitable for long-term use.
