History of the Constitution of the People’s Republic of China

This chapter examines the legislative history of China’s constitution from the enactment of the Common Program, the 1954 Constitution, the 1975 Constitution, and the 1978 Constitution to the 1982 Constitution, discusses the contents, features and significance of these constitutional documents. It highlights the importance of the CPC leadership for China’s Constitutional change for safeguarding people’s role as the masters of the country, advancing reform and modernization, strengthening socialist rule of law, and maintaining national unity and stability. It concludes that the Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics should act as the guide to implement the new ideas, thoughts and strategies and the requirements of strengthening the constitutional enforcement and supervision, promoting constitutional review and safeguarding the Constitution’s authority.
