Metronidazole is a nitroimidazole drug that was first introduced in the market as an antiprotozoal agent. Currently, its utility has expanded to include a few dermatologic conditions, namely lichen planus, acne, rosacea, periorificial dermatitis, seborrheic dermatitis and cutaneous metastatic Crohn’s disease. Although it is a pregnancy category ‘B’ drug, it is absolutely contraindicated during the first trimester of pregnancy. Besides, it is highly economical, with an acceptable safety profile that proves an added advantage.
