Acitretin is a synthetic second-generation retinoid widely employed for the treatment of a variety of dermatologic conditions. It is of particular importance in the treatment of generalized pustular psoriasis with propitious outcomes. Other indications of acitretin include pityriasis rubra pilaris, lichen planus, Bowenoid papulosis and oral leukoplakia, to name a few. If used with careful monitoring and dose adjustments, the likelihood of side effects are minimized considerably, allowing long-term use of the drug.
