Foscarnet is an inorganic pyrophosphate analogue that is antagonistic for all herpes virus and HIV. Renal toxicity is the major concern for foscarnet. Therefore, it becomes imperative to vigilantly monitor the renal profile of patients while administering foscarnet. Also, saline hydration is mandatory prior to infusing foscarnet. Further, foscarnet infusion needs to be slowly given. These precautions help in reducing the nephrotoxic potential of foscarnet.
