Chapter 3 defines a framework of “six fields, three elements, five stages” for great power competition. The ruling power and the rising power compete in six key fields: manufacturing, aggregate economy (GDP), technology, finance, military power, and global governance. The relationship between two countries is determined by three elements: the relative strength of the two countries, their political and cultural identity, and third-party effects. Based on this, we delineate five stages in the relationship between China and the United States: confrontation (1949–1978), small country-big country (1979–2016), great power competition I (2017–2035), great power competition II (2036–2060), and competitive coexistence (2061–).
