Arthroscopic Partial Radial Head Resection for Elbow Osteoarthritis

Radial head resection is a surgical procedure performed for a range of conditions, including osteoarthritis, inflammatory arthritis, or, in rare instances, radial head fractures. In the context of osteoarthritis, this procedure is more commonly performed for post-traumatic arthritis, particularly following fractures, rather than for primary osteoarthritis. The decision to proceed with radial head resection is influenced by various factors, including the extent of joint degeneration, deformity of the radial head, associated wear of the capitellum, and the patient’s functional requirements. While radial head resection is a valid option for treating certain cases, it is not typically the first choice. Preservation of the radial head is often preferred to maintain joint function and delay more extensive interventions. However, it may be considered when conservative treatment or radial head preserving techniques such as arthroscopic debridement or proximal radial shortening osteotomy fail to provide sufficient symptom relief.
