The convergence of drones and the Internet of Things (IoT) led to the emergence of the Internet of Flying Things (IoFT) to increase interconnectivity, network range, and operability across several applications. This study explores the evolution of IoFT, its layered network architecture, the connected communication protocols, challenges, and implementations of IoFT. Significant areas of focus include the implementation of IoFT in domains such as defense, healthcare, and emergency response management, as well as in areas like smart communities and ecosystem regulation. This paper also examines security challenges faced by IoFT use cases. By providing a comprehensive overview of current innovations and future prospects, this work strives to highlight the potential of IoFT in revolutionizing digital technology.
