Mental Health and Industrial Disasters in South Asia
摘要
Over the last 80 years, since the end of the Second World War, there has been significant progress in the recognition, classification, and management of disasters in general, as well as their associated mental health aspects in particular. Among the disasters, industrial disasters are special as they reflect the failures of regulation, monitoring of safety systems, limitations in personnel training across all categories, and the organization of care for survivors. South Asia has been particularly prone to industrial disasters due to the rapid growth of industries, limited regulations, and inadequate monitoring of the systems. The Bhopal disaster is the worst industrial disaster in human history. The Bhopal disaster is the most studied for the industrial lapses, the legal aspects, and the human costs of the disaster. Even after 40 years, the fact that the issues are alive is a reflection of the need for preventive measures and interventions to address the needs of the survivors. This chapter reviews the other disasters of South Asian countries. The positive aspect of the disaster mental health field is the significant progress in biology, psychology, and social aspects, as well as the development of numerous innovative therapies.
