This chapter explores verbal play from a systemic functional perspective, focusing on the semiotic resources involved in verbal creativity and the coupling of interpersonal and experiential meanings in these instances of language use. It will be shown that creative verbal play builds on the foundation of formulaicity but twists or combines existing language elements in novel ways. Particularly, verbal play often makes use of the experiential frames of existing patterns but adds new interpersonal and experiential dimensions which fit the new context. The coupling of experiential and interpersonal meanings in verbal play enhances communication by making it more relevant, engaging, memorable, and contextually appropriate.
