The paper industry is one of the most critical industrial sectors internationally due to its economic benefits. The present-day status of nanotechnology development, particularly in the context of additives used in the paper industry, can be the main topic of this overview. Nanotechnology is increasingly being used in the paper industry to improve production processes with a strong emphasis on sustainability. This study primarily examines the role of nanofillers, nanofibers, chemical compounds and nanocomposites in paper applications. The incorporation of nanocomposites has led to significant improvements in various properties of the produced sheets, including printability, mechanical strength, gloss and gas barrier properties. This development has attracted considerable attention from scientists and researchers and highlights the potential of nanotechnology to revolutionize the paper manufacturing sector. Strength, low weight, high stiffness, large surface area, and enhanced stability are just a few of the claimed advantages of nano additives. However, several challenges, such as high costs, material incompatibilities, and knowledge gaps, have hindered the large-scale adoption and commercialization of nanotechnology in the paper industry
