Progress of the Methanol Society

This chapter presents the world’s national actions and technological trends toward a methanol society. While methanol has considerable potential as a fuel, hydrogen carrier, and chemical feedstock, its widespread use remains limited due to economic and policy barriers. A key enabler for a methanol society is the availability of low-carbon methanol synthesized from renewable hydrogen and captured CO₂. However, both hydrogen production—particularly via water electrolysis—and CO₂ capture technologies are currently expensive and energy-intensive. This chapter reviews recent technological advances in these areas, including cost reductions in electrolysis systems and innovations in direct air capture and industrial CO₂ recovery. It also examines emerging pilot projects that integrate renewable energy with methanol synthesis. Despite current limitations, the concept of localized methanol production hubs remains attractive for enhancing energy self-sufficiency and enabling carbon recycling. This chapter emphasizes the need for supportive policy frameworks, targeted investment, and international collaboration. By aligning technological innovation with systemic planning, a methanol-centered approach could offer a realistic and scalable solution to the climate crisis.
