Early Intervention for Child and Family Well-Being

“Prevention is better than cure” is a principle that underpins the concept of early intervention in promoting child and family well-being. Therefore, timely identification, intervention, and support provided to children and families are critical in social work practice. Early intervention helps in identifying and responding to challenges before they escalate into crises. Consequently, it prevents experiences of unnecessary trauma and reduces long-term social and economic costs among families. Early intervention entails targeted support provided to families to identify risk and prevent problems as well as to establish response measures. Early intervention is critical in child and family well-being because it improves outcomes educational, emotional development and social functioning of individuals while reducing future reliance on social work welfare services. Early intervention positively impacts child and family well-being because it reduces child vulnerability by preventing social ills and supporting children and families to overcome adversity. Therefore, this chapter examines early intervention in relation to child and family well-being, its rationale, theoretical perspectives, and challenges. This chapter concludes with implications for social work practice with families.
