Empowering Voices: Social Media, Islamist Youth, and Political Participation in Malaysia
摘要
This chapter explores how Malaysian Islamist youthIslamistIslamist youth increasingly use social media to engage in politics, mobilise support, and share their political ideas. Based on 48 in-depth interviews and an analysis of TikTok-based online campaign activities, the study shows how platforms formerly mainly for entertainment now play a vital role in political outreach. Young supporters of Malaysian Perikatan Nasional and Parti Islam SeMalaysia (PAS) create short videos, organise coordinated campaigns, and combine religious messages with political aims to attract and influence young voters. Social media has boosted political awareness and participation among youth, but it also raises concerns like fake news, divisive content, and government restrictions on online free speech. This chapter contributes to the ongoing conversation on Islam and politics in Southeast Asia by illustrating how digital spaces influence the political strategies of IslamistIslamist youth in Malaysia’s changing democracy.
