Mental Health of Sex Workers
摘要
The mental health of sex workers has been a heated debate for a long time but is understudied at the same time. Mental health is a state of well-being in which the individual realises their abilities, can cope with everyday life stressors, can work productively and fruitfully, and can contribute to their community. Sex workers are going through several mental health issues, viz., clinical and non-clinical. This chapter sheds light on the nature of mental health challenges faced by sex workers, the influence of socio-demographic factors on mental health, risk factors and protective factors of mental health. It was found that the sex workers are suffering from psychopathological conditions and non-pathological conditions. Violence, discrimination, work environment, etc., act as risk factors for mental health issues; at the same time, resilience, social support, and mental health support act as protective factors for mental health.
