Chapter 2, titled “The Spiritual Ecosystem of Missionary University in Early Modern China,” explores the emergence and development of missionary universities in China from 1882 to 1950. These institutions, initially referred to as “missionary universities” and later as “Christian universities,” were established by Western missionaries with the aim of spreading Christian values and Western culture. While these universities championed the Christian spirit, they were also influenced by Chinese local culture and national spirit, leading to a dynamic and evolving spiritual ecosystem. The chapter examines the university spirit during this period, its manifestations at both macro and micro levels, and the interaction and integration of Chinese and Western elements. It also discusses the mechanisms of development of the modern university spirit in China, emphasizing the gradual expansion from individual elements to a comprehensive whole.
