The automation in the cytology laboratory plays an important role in standardization of the processing, staining, digitization and reporting of slides. Liquid-based cytology (LBC) prepares the smear and stains it automatically. The automated stainer stains different stains automatically. Whole slide scanning (WSI) helps to digitize the cytology smears which can be interpreted by multiple cytologists from multiple locations. Artificial intelligence (AI) also has a major role in automation by automated capturing of images, extracting the features and diagnosing the diseases. The present chapter discusses the various aspects of automation in the Cytology laboratory.
