This chapter will analyze five calligraphy machines and four subcharacter-level works. While both types of works share similarities, they differ in how they transform the sinograph into digital art. Subcharacter-level works consist, or partly consist, of components of sinographs rather than complete, legitimate sinographs. These components may be generated or manipulated by the audience to create new pseudo-characters, but they are usually illegitimate or have a distorted appearance and structure. In contrast, calligraphy machines invite their audience to draw sinographs through a provided mechanism. Participants can usually, but not always, draw anything they want, not limited to sinographs. The input drawings are processed with algorithms designed for handling sinographs, which then generate visual and sometimes audio results. Subcharacter-level works focus on the aesthetic and linguistic potential of the components within characters. These works typically highlight the affordances of componential recombination, a perceptual affordance through which participants can spatially and semantically combine the components, and double-readability, a cognitive affordance that confuses readers as to whether the glyphs they are viewing are complete sinographs, parts of sinographs, or something else entirely.
