Wasteland Reclamation: Understanding Community Aspirations—Case of Brahmapuram
摘要
The alarming growth of landfills, exemplified by the case of Brahmapuram in Vadavucode Puthencruz Gram Panchayath, poses multifaceted challenges encompassing environmental degradation in the adjacent regions. This research investigates the potential of repurposing these wastelands into vibrant urban spaces. The study highlights the vast expanse of usable urban territory squandered due to landfill occupation, emphasizing the urgent need for reclamation. Employing a comprehensive methodology, the research combines an extensive literature review and live case studies of successfully reclaimed landfill projects worldwide. Central to the investigation are methodologies such as biomining and bio-capping, explored for their applicability and feasibility concerning the Brahmapuram landfill. The research delves into the intricacies of various remediation techniques, assessing their ecological impact. Furthermore, a crucial aspect of this study involves a sociological survey conducted within the community. This survey provides invaluable insights into the community's acceptance of landfill reclamation projects and uncovers their aspirations regarding the transformed space. The research culminates in a thorough analysis of the case studies, coupled with findings from the sociological survey. This analysis informs the formulation of a curated list of best practices drawn from global case studies and pertinent literature. These practices serve as a foundational framework for the redevelopment of Brahmapuram, aligning the transformation with the genuine needs and desires of the community. By amalgamating ecological sensitivity, technological innovation, and community aspirations, this research advocates for a holistic approach toward landfill reclamation, envisioning not just environmental restoration but the creation of sustainable and harmonious urban oases.
