Primary Ocular Infections
摘要
HSV-1 infection remains the primary cause of herpetic eye diseases across all age groups and acquired during childhood and adolescence and is markedly more widespread than HSV-2 infection. Most primary infections are subclinical. HSV infection in children poses a significant diagnostic challenge due to difficulties in examination and a high risk of amblyopia from corneal scarring. Primary infection generally occurs through the oropharyngeal mucosa on exposure to secretions of an individual shedding HSV. Most of the cases are diagnosed clinically based on the clinical features, antecedent history, and high degree of suspicion. Considering the significant morbidity caused by HSV, particularly in children, prompt diagnosis, close monitoring, and appropriate antiviral therapy are essential to reduce the impact of this ocular herpes simplex infections and to improve the outcomes.
