Congenital herpes is a serious condition resulting from maternal HSV transmission to the foetus or newborn. The infection can lead to a spectrum of systemic and ocular manifestations, ranging from isolated mucocutaneous lesions to more severe outcomes like keratitis, chorioretinitis, or optic atrophy. Early diagnosis and prompt antiviral treatment are crucial to prevent potentially blinding complications. This chapter discusses the pathophysiology, clinical presentation, diagnosis, and management of congenital herpes, emphasizing the need for comprehensive care in affected neonates.
