Antiviral Agents and Pharmacotherapeutics
摘要
From idoxuridine to valganciclovir, there have been a number of antiviral agents discovered and further studied for the treatment of viral keratitis. As clinicians, it is necessary to understand the different mechanisms of action of various drugs. The pharmacotherapeutics of these drugs determine which drug is best suited for each aetiology. Viral keratitis is an umbrella term used to describe infections caused by Herpes simplex virus (HSV), Varicella zoster virus (VZV), Adenovirus, Cytomegalovirus (CMV), Epstein Barr virus (EBV) and others. Viral keratitis has a wide range of presentations from dendritic to stromal to endothelitis. After determining the type of presentation, choice of antiviral agents along with other pharmacological agents like steroids is ascertained to achieve the best possible outcome and improve the quality of life of patients with viral keratitis.
