Viral diseases of cornea are hallmarked by recurrences and chronicity. The potentially blinding sequelae of viral keratitis due to inflammation vascularization and scarring mainly arise from cycles of frequent relapses. After the primary infection, the implicated virus may lie dormant in neural tissues followed by reactivation due to specific predispositions, which may result into active infection, inflammation or immune response. Hence the most pertinent approach to manage such episodes is to obviate reactivation. Prevention and prophylaxis of viral keratitis is mainly directed against Herpes Simplex-, Varicella Zoster- and Adenovirus-induced chronicity and recurrences. HSV keratitis is hallmarked with recurrences, while HZO with recurrence and chronicity. This chapter will comprehensively describe the preventive strategies and prophylactic treatment best suited in different disease conditions caused by viral reactivation.
