Herpes zoster Ophthalmicus (HZO) is the second commonest manifestation of Herpes Zoster (HZ). About 50% patients of herpes zoster develop ophthalmic complications. While neurologic complications like cranial nerve palsies are seen in 30% of Herpes zoster patients and optic neuropathy has been reported to occur in less than 1% of HZO patients. Post-herpetic neuralgia (PHN) is the most debilitating sequelae. Other neurological complications, such as cranial nerve palsies, meningitis, contralateral hemiparesis, and acute or chronic encephalitis may also be seen in rare occurrences.
