A Study of the Role of Mindfulness and Satisfaction of Basic Psychological Needs in the Levels of Flourishing Experienced by Young Women in Urban India
摘要
Collectivist cultures like India still struggle with providing autonomy and acknowledging the competence of young women. In spite of significant technological advances, women are still expected to adhere to conventional social norms about marriage, public behavior, and social roles. A study was carried out to assess the relationship between need satisfaction, mindfulness, and flourishing. It was hypothesized that young women who experience greater satisfaction of their need for autonomy and competence and would experience a greater sense of flourishing. It was expected that mindfulness would mediate the relationship between need satisfaction and flourishing. The study was conducted in Mumbai and young women in the age group of 18–25 years were surveyed with a sample size of 236 respondents. A mediation analysis was conducted to understand the roles of mindfulness in the experience of flourishing in young woman who have their psychological needs met. The Basic Psychological Needs Satisfaction Scale, the Flourishing Scale, and the Mindfulness Attention Awareness Scale were the instruments used to carry out this analysis. The mediation analysis indicated that mindfulness only mediated the relationship between the need for competence and flourishing. It did not have any significant role to play when mediating the relationship between flourishing and the other two needs of autonomy and relatedness. Mindful consideration of how autonomy is restricted is unlikely to lead to flourishing. Patriarchal norms impact the freedom to establish connections as per one’s choice. Awareness about the norms and the limitations they create does not lead to flourishing. Cultural differences in need satisfaction help in understanding these outcomes.
